Body Language
Body language is a type of non-verbal communication, which includes language such as gestures, facail expressions, posture and bodily mannerisms. These can communicate and explain how a person is feeling and can be done both consciously and sub-consciously.
Body Lanaguage is very relevent to leadership and managment within a business and also in places where it can easily be observed by many people.
Examples of Body Language:
- Crossed Arms = Can be interpreted as a barrier or way of putting up a guard. It can also be viewed as a sign of being angry, as you would fold your arms in an act of defence.
- Standing up tall and straight - This can communicate a sense of authority and could also be a sign of confidence because you are opening out your posture.
How is Body Language effective in a business?
Body Language plays a key role within a business, and whilst Body Language is most commonly subcouncious, we sometimes leak things accidentally. Body Language can help identify the role a person plays in a business, either one of the top responsible roles like a boss, or a slightly lower role such as a supervisor.

Use of Intonation (Pitch)
Intonation is how we say things, rather then being noticed on what was said. Without the use of intonation, it would be impossible to understand the expression and thoughts that go with words. When someone speaks, their pitch moves both up and down within a 'pitch range'. Everybody has their own pitch range, and this is most visible between a male and female.
Languages are common for having different 'pitch ranges'. For example, English has a particulary wide pitch range!
Awareness of intonation can help aid communication, this is a very good advantage; especially within a business. Intonation can help someone understand whether they are angry or happy with you, i.e. a conversation between a boss and their employee, where the employee has completed a task to a high standard would contain a high pitch or tone.
However, this can lead on to incorrect intonation, which can result in mis-understandings, speakers losing interesting or even taking offence to someone.

Nodding
Nodding is where the head raises and lowers slighty, mostly done when greeting, if you understand something or to
give someone a signal.
Nodding can be effective within a business becuase it can give a signal (normally a nod means 'yes') without having to verbally say it. This can be a much quicker process and can take less time but nodding can sometimes be mis-communicated as people may not have recieved or understood the gesture.

Summarising and Paraphrasing
Summarising is where you put all the key points or key facts into one paragraph/one section. This limits any unwanted or irrelevant information being processed, which is not needed.
Paraphrasing is where you express the meaning of something either written or spoken, using different words. The aim of paraphrasing is to make the written or spoken words become more clear and understanding to you.
Whether you paraphrase or summarise, this still isn't your own work and credit must be given to the author.
Both summarising and paraphrasing can be effective in a business because they save you alot of time and help you to understand what is being spoken or written about. These elements are very common in any business as it helps to get the jobs/tasks completed on time and by the dealines.
